Stop apologizing for things that don't need an apology
We say sorry all day but half of them are unnecessary
How many times have you said “sorry” today? Let’s see.. Did you say any of the following phrases or questions today?
“Sorry, but could you repeat that?”
“Sorry, I’m late!”
“Sorry, but can I ask a question?” (This is
From where I come from, it is customary to have our default settings in the “apology” mode. We hand out apologies like free samples at Costco, and for things that don’t even require a “sorry”!
And like other things, the over-usage of an apology actually dilutes the power of a real, sincere apology. When you apologize for literally everything, you start to forget what actually deserves a genuine “sorry.”
Let me give you some examples of things you don’t owe an apology for: taking up space, having questions, needing a moment, being yourself, asking someone to clarify their mumbling (this one’s on them, honestly).
Next time you find yourself about to apologize unnecessarily, halt your tongue and try swapping “sorry” for something else:
Instead of “Sorry, but could you repeat that?”, try “Could you clarify that?”
Instead of “Sorry, I’m late!” (when you’re actually not. But because the other person has arrived earlier than you, you feel bad), try “Thanks for your patience!”
Instead of “Sorry, but can I ask a question?”, try this: JUST 👏 ASK 👏 THE 👏QUESTION 👏 DIRECTLY.
You’ve got to start saving your apologies for moments that genuinely deserve them. Alright that’s all.
Sorry for the rant. (Jk-I’m not sorry at all.)
Happy Saturday guys.
With love,
Krish
