Motivation is Dumb. Just Do Stuff.

Motivation won't text back.

Have you ever noticed how motivation loves to leave you in the dark when you actually need it?

You feel excited at night and convinced that when you wake up tomorrow, you’ll have all the energy in the world to drink a healthy smoothie, work out at 6 AM, and solve world peace before lunch.

But when tomorrow comes, I’ll be on my own..feeling frightened of, the things that I don’t know. (NO! NOT THAT! FOCUS, KRISH).

I was saying, when tomorrow comes, motivation is gone. Vanished. Left you on “seen.”

And then you tell yourself, “maybe tomorrow.” The cycle repeats until god-knows-when.

What I’ve realised is, motivation isn’t reliable and it’s also actively sabotaging you. Think of motivation like that friend who always says “let’s catch up soon!” but never sets an actual date. You can’t trust it. Waiting for motivation to arrive before you start something important is like waiting at a bus stop where the bus doesn’t even stop.

The good thing is, motivation does come to pick you up, but it comes late. The trick isn’t to wait around for inspiration to strike. It’s to start doing something, and motivation will eventually notice you’re having fun without it and come running back.

Some examples from my recent life:

  • Writing newsletters? sometimes painful until sentence #3, and then becomes really enjoyable.

  • Doing dishes. I hate it, but once I’m washing that first bowl, suddenly I’ll find myself deep-cleaning the kitchen.

  • Parenting at 2 AM: No one feels motivated to wake up, but stumbling into the nursery usually gives me more time to to enjoy my daughter’s smile (or at least fewer tears, usually mine).

So if you’re feeling stuck right now waiting for motivation, stop waiting and JUST DO IT! DON’T THINK. JUST DO.

Pick one tiny action and just start. Motivation will follow eventually. Probably after coffee.

With love,

Krish
