It's Okay to Suck at Something

Go be awful at something

Growing up, my dad was like a superhero. He could fix stuff, build stuff, and figure out pretty much anything. Broken oven? Leaking pipe? Damaged sofa? All fixed in a timely manner.

I remember one day my mom wanted to drink some yogurt but was too lazy to buy it from the supermarket. Once my dad heard this, he immediately proceed to making yogurt from scratch.

It’s all good and amazing, and I wouldn’t trade my dad with any other dads, but the downside is I grew up believing I had to know everything too. I was taught that saying “I don’t know” wasn’t okay. So, I have always pretended to know what I was doing, and internally panic as I secretly Google instructions later on. Although this has given me the skills to actually be extremely resourceful and creative in my problem solving skills, it’s really exhausting.

This pressure makes you scared to try new things because new means being terrible at something, at least at first. So if you are anything like me, please give yourself the permission to be terrible at something.

Trying to always be good or pretending you know things you don’t, creates anxiety. It makes learning new skills stressful rather than fun.

The whole point of starting something new is, legitimately, being terrible. The first video you record will make you cringe. The first cake you bake will be barely edible. And the first time you hold a badminton racket will probably damage your doubles partner.

But that’s how learning works! You start awful and then gradually suck less. Or, in other cases, you just keep on sucking and realise that it’s probably not for you. AND THAT IS OKAY!

So go out there and do something you know you’ll be bad at. Allow yourself to enjoy being terrible, even if just for a little while.

If anything, maybe.. just maybe, you’ll actually have fun.

Have a great weekend everyone.

With love,

Krish

p.s. Tell me about something you’ve tried over and over again but realised it’s probably not for you. I’ll start: playing the guitar.
